Today's class of "green" coatings depend on light stabilizers to protect against UV degradation.
It is important to know UV curable coatings especially in dry faster system. Light stabilizers including UV absorbers (UVA) and hinder amine light stabilizers (HALS) are known to prevent coating damages caused by UV irradiation. Photo initiator absorbs UV energy to initiate curing processes. UV absorber absorbs UV energy to prevent coatings damages. As a result, UV absorber and photo initiator are competing for UV energy to cause negative impacts about cure speed.
Lignin, when exposed to sunlight, can easily be degraded. Results from a study, carried out by Everlight, suggest when wood was treated with high performance light stabilisers prior to the application of a clear coat, can extend the protection of lignin from UV light degradation
Many optoelectronic devices (including optoelectronic displays and photovoltaic devices) are mainly composed of polymers which are susceptible to environmental factors such as light, heat and oxygen which may destroy the material and result in cracking, yellowing or pulverization. As optical components must now meet more and more stringent quality requirements, in this paper, the properties of materials and how to choose the appropriate light stabilizer to enhance the material's resistance to yellowing or UV cut-off performance is studied in depth. Lignin, when exposed to the sunlight, can easily be degraded. To preserve the beauty of wood grain, a clear coat containing UV absorbers and light stabilizers is commonly applied to the surface for protection. However, the effectiveness of such application is limited. Results from this study suggested when Southern Pine was treated with high performance light stabilizers prior to the application of clear coat can effectively extend the protection of lignin from UV light degradation.
